In August 2005 Bernard was widowed, his dear wife Rita died. He sold his home and went to live with one of his sons and his family. Bernard missed Rita and wanted to do something for the Lord to fill his days. One of the Church officers at Witton Chapel suggested he contacted Brass Tacks an organisation that assists missionary workers with practical projects.
Bernard is an extremely practical , capable workman. He applied to Brass Tacks and went to Kalene Hospital in North West Zambia in 2006 to assist in the renovation of the shower and toilet facilities there. While there he was moved with a great compassion to do something for the needy children he’d met.
He returned to Zambia later in 2006 . After that visit he concluded that he should spend the rest of his days in Zambia (Bernard is 70 years old) , his aim was to start an Orphaned Children’s Village and Nutrition Centre. Many of the children seen at the hospital had illnesses linked to malnutrition.
At the beginning of 2007 Bernard left for Zambia. We sang these hymns on his last Sunday at Witton. Amazing Grace How Sweet The Sound, I once was a stranger to grace and to God, Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness, Come we that love the Lord .
